Exploring the Art of Boro
21st March 2020 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm£70
A new class exploring the traditional Japanese mending techniques of Sashiko and Boro.
‘Boro’ means ‘rags’ or ‘tattered cloth’, referring to Japanese patched and much-mended textiles, often held together with simple running stitches (Sashiko) and so creating a new art form in itself.
You will learn simple Sashiko stitching and use the easy method of raw-edged applique to create your own design from precious pieces of old Japanese textiles.
You will be given a basic kit to work from, but there will be a varied choice of authentic Japanese threads and fabrics, from Helens own collection, gathered during the years she lived in Tokyo.
At the end of the day you will have created your own piece of ‘Boro Art’ to turn into a pouch, a needle case, a book-cover, or even a framed picture for your wall.
All materials will be supplied but please bring your own scissors and a thimble if you use one.
Refreshments and light lunch included.
